posticon On-line political game

Something I came across that looks fun (though I haven't really got deeply into it yet) -

http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi

Basically, you create a nation (the hardest part is finding a name that hasn't been claimed already) by answering some simple questions to determine your style of government. Each day you are presented with a "issue" to resolve, and the way you choose to resolve it determines how happy your people are. There's no winning or losing, though you can compare your UN ranking with other players to see which policies work best.

Here is the nation I created:

The Empire of Raddishes

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Some
Economy: Fragile
Political Freedoms: Excellent

The Empire of Raddishes is a tiny, safe nation, renowned for its burgeoning mole population. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Healthcare, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 39%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Pizza Delivery industry.

Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Raddishes's national animal is the mole, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the raddish.

          The Republic of Colomba Placidia

UN category: New York Times Democracy!
CIVIL RIGHTS: Average
ECONOMY: Good
POLITICAL FREEDOMS: superb.

The Republic of Colomba Placidia is a tiny, pleasant nation, remarkable for its burgeoning pigeon population. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.

The enormous government is mainly concerned with Social Welfare, although Healthcare and Education are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 28%. A large private sector is led by the Soda Sales industry, followed by Door-to-door Insurance Sales and Gambling.

Crime is relatively low. Colomba Placidia's national animal is the pigeon and its currency is the olive.

Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Religion & Spirituality, Healthcare, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 29%. A substantial private sector is dominated by the Woodchip Exports industry.

Crime is moderate. Heathersighs's national animal is the duck billed platypus and its currency is the wibble.

This really does make you think!

I was all set to govern a benevolent dictatorship but then when my first "issue" was about whether people should vote, I looked at my ratings and realised I had to be a democracy or the people would probably hate me!

Now I have an "issue" about cheap foreign imports. My gut instinct is to go for an idealistic solution, then I look at my "fragile" economy and realise I can't...

I really recommend everybody joining the game. Even though it's done in a light hearted way, it does bring real political issues "home" to you.

The Empire of Alpha Centaurs

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Very Good
Economy: Reasonable
Political Freedoms: Very Good
Location: the South Pacific

The Empire of Alpha Centaurs is a tiny, socially progressive nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 32%, but much higher for the wealthy. A very small private sector is dominated by the Uranium Mining industry.

Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force.

The Constitutional Monarchy of Little World
UN Category: Liberal Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Excellent
Economy: Fragile
Political Freedoms: Superb

Location: the South Pacific
The Constitutional Monarchy of Little World is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 5 million love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Social Welfare, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 40%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Woodchip Exports.

Crime is relatively low. Little World's national animal is the unicorn, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the stone.

Motto: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. "

Hmm, seems I better work on my economic standing...

The Constitutional Monarchy of The Red Lair

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Very Good
Economy: Fragile
Political Freedoms: Excellent
Location: the West Pacific

The Constitutional Monarchy of The Red Lair is a tiny, safe nation, notable for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 57%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Soda Sales.

Crime is totally unknown. The Red Lair's national animal is the dragon, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the dragon.

The Democratic Republic of Rimtopia

"Come In, Wipe Your Feet and Behave"

UN Category: Civil Rights Lovefest
Civil Rights: Superb
Economy: Very Strong
Political Freedoms: World Benchmark

Location: the Pacific
The Democratic Republic of Rimtopia is a tiny, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-working, intelligent population of 5 million hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The medium-sized, corrupt, liberal government devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Commerce receiving almost no funds by comparison. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 14%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Retail, Book Publishing, and Trout Farming industries.

Crime is moderate, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Rimtopia's national animal is the echidna, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the arnodollar.

The Holy Empire of Shivouda
"Steal while you can, then let others steal for you"

UN Category: Moralistic Democracy
Civil Rights:Outlawed
Economy: Very Strong
Political Freedoms: Below Average
Location: the West Pacific

The Holy Empire of Shivouda is a small, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 7 million are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

The minute, moralistic government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Commerce, and Defence. Income tax is unheard of. A substantial private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing industry, followed by Beef-Based Agriculture and Furniture Restoration.

Crime is a problem. Shivouda's national animal is the planaria, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the zwitterion.

Shivouda is ranked 3699th in the region and 56,078th inthe world for Largest Pizza Delivery Sector.

I have created the Confederacy of Quaffers of Ale, an inoffensive centrist democracy. Our currency is the draught (go figure) and our motto is "We're only here for the beer!"

Our national animal is the domestic house cat, our private sector is dominated by the Cheese exports industry and we have a very low crime rate thanks to a well funded police force.

We are currently in the Eastern Pacific with about 7000 neighbours.

Are you folks all in the same region?
