posticon What would you do?

You and a person you love deeply are placed in separate rooms with a button next to each of you. You know that you will both be killed unless one of you presses your button before 60 minutes pass; furthermore, the first to press the button will save the other person, but will immediately be killed.

What would you do?

I'd press the button on the last second just before the 60' expired...

BTW: Welcome aboard, Stretchball. Enjoy your stay here and have fun...

I'd press the button as quickly as I emotionally could.

Because I never give up hope until the last minute. Sort of an optimistic view on things and situations, eventhough in this particular case I might risk the death of my beloved should they not be so ...optimistic like myself...

Take a deep breath, center myself and push that button as soon as I'm ready.

I'm not really afraid of death, I'm more afraid of pain.

Thats a good point. Most people are afraid of death because it is usually associated with pain. Especially in our era with violence on TV, video games, even popular music. But if people were offered death without pain they would take it, hands down.

I dont know if there would be any time that you would prefer to have a painful death over a painless one. Exept if there were other consequences. Example: Adding on the the original question about the two buttons, next to the button is a switch. It choses what kind of death you will have when/if you press the button. One setting for painless death, the other for painfull death. You know that if you select the painless death, you will die painlessly, but your family and everyone you love and cherish will live very roughly for the rest of their lives. But if you choose the painfull death, you will die very painfully but your family and friends will not be touched. And now as I am writing this, I realize there could be a THIRD setting on the switch. One for a VERY painfull death. If you choose this setting, you will die in the slowest, most painfull death imaginable, but your family and friends will be granted with good fortune for the rest of their lives. Maybe they would become very wealthy, live to a very old age, or something of that sort.

What would you do?

I would wait out the 60 minutes to see what happens. Of course the "noble" thing to do is to push the button and take the hit within 60 min. However, not knowing what the other person is doing means that that person is probably doing the "noble" thing to. Ergo, the double death in 60 minutes happens, not because the time runs out, but because both did the noble thing.

It seems to me that you are both going to die anyway. You may as well make the cruel person who invented the torture have the death on their conscience.

See if we can yell to each other and press the button at the same time, or press it the second before the time is up emoticon (we're dead either way, waiting or pushing button)
