Beautiful and brave she fought in battles beside her husband and didn't hesitate to offer her famous long hair as a gift to the goddess Aphroditi asking her to bring her husband back from a battle. Here, in a short version, is what history tells us of her: Berenice II (267 or 266 BC - 221BC) was the daughter of Magas of Cyrene and Queen Apama, and the wife of Prolemy III, Evergetes I- the third ruler of the Ptolrmaic dynasty of Egypt. During her husband's absence on an expedition to Syria, she dedicated her hair to Venus for his safe return, and placed it in the temple of the goddess at Zephyrium. The hair having by some unknown means disappeared, Conon of Samos, explained the phenomenon in courtly phrase, by saying that it had been carried to the heavens and placed among the stars. The name "Coma Berenices" or Berenice's hair, applied to a constellation, commemorates this incident. Berenice II ruled Egypt equally with Prolemy III and participated in battles alongside her husband. Soon after her husband's death (221 BC) she was murdered at the instigation of her son Prolemy IV with whom she was probably associated in the government. The predecessor of the modern city of Bengazi was refounded by her and received her name: Berenice. nondisclosed_email@example.com (C Berenice)Tue, 18 Jul 2006 07:25:14 +0000 Emperors and Empresses, Kings and Queens of History!https://bfarfrontiers.runboard.com/p5021,from=rss#post5021https://bfarfrontiers.runboard.com/p5021,from=rss#post5021From ancient times to modern, royalty has contributed to the history and culture of the world one way or another.
