each year I just add something new, or replace something old.
What amazes me is that most people don't do that. For instance, if you need more RAM, buy a stick of RAM, unplug the computer, open the bloody thing, and put the RAM in it. Not exactly nuclear physics...
Back to the topic...
My newest computer is an AMD ath64 based machine, and when it comes to operating systems, I use WinXP professional on one HDD, and Ubuntu (a Debian-based Linux) on the other.

Half the time the only thing that has changed is the motherboard. They really aren't that hard to install. I've done 3 different motherboards in my current computer.
My brother once broke the motherboard, and since I didn't feel like givin 150 Euros for a new one, I just soldered it back together. It had multiple layers, it was a nightmare, and it took me the whole day, but, strangely, it works still (children, do not try this at home).

Exactly, instead of paying 700-1000 Euros for a new computer every year or every other year, you can just occasionally buy a piece or two and always keep you computer fast and furious.
