posticon Let's have some fun...

How about a quiz guys?... One of us posts the description of a Mythical / Legentary event or character (hero, playwrite, God etc) and the rest of us will have to identify it (/him/her...)
The more nationalities will be involved the more challenging it will be!!...
I'll start!...
Ancient Greek hero (of course what else?); as an infant he killed two snakes when they slithered into his crib. And his name iiiiis?......

Ok, I suppose I had better draw on a British myth...

When your father is called "The Greatest Knight of All" you've got a lot to live up to, but the son was actually able to complete the quest his father couldn't. And "junior" was... ?

Yep - just wanted to make sure I got it right first.

Ok, this Greek God was cast out of Olympus for finding fault with all of the other Gods and basically driving them insane. Except for Aphrodite, with whom he could find no fault (when she was naked, that is - he apparently did complain that her sandals made noise).

Ok Addi...Its been a major league BAD day today and now, on top of everything else that came my way, -I- DON"T know the answer to that Q!!! I am Greek for heavens sakes...I SHOULD know!!! Arghhhhhhhhhhh.....
So I am going to sit here in the corner, quite like a church mousse, in misery with my broken down Greek pride and wait for someone to find the answer!
Come on ...WHO is that cotton-picking God already???.... emoticon

Ok now, my turn: Where does the word "Galaxy" (ie. Milky Way) come from?

First off, that was very obscure - the only reason I know about it is because someone else on Runboard (no, not Alpha emoticon) made a joke involving this god to me. I'd never heard of it, which was surprising considering how into mythology I am. It should have at least looked familiar to me. So don't feel bad CB - you're in good company on that one!

How long did it take you to find it, Alpha? emoticon emoticon

I have NEVER heard of him ...it isn't in any of my mythology books either..Was he a lesser God?...(trying to save face here!!!)...

"Galaxy"= from the Greek word GALA=Milk.

According to legend, the goddess Era was breastfeeding Heracles when she realised he was not really one of her children and that Zeus had lied to her about him!...She, fiercely, pulled her breast away from the babe's mouth and the milk that squirted from it created the Galaxy!....

Next Q:... What is the legend of the "golden rain" ?...

Well... how long does it take for a king of bad puns to find out about a fellow God of mockery? It was off my head, actually... Heheh...

Isn't that how Zeus impregnated people sometimes? I don't know for sure, just sounds vaguely familiar...

Yes, Muse, it does...but it can be of any nationality...We don't HAVE to know all the answers. If one Q goes unanswered then the person who asked it should provide the answer after a reasonable amount of time. This way we all learn.

You are on the right track Addi...but not "people" in general. He turned himself into golden rain for a specific reason and for just this one specific young woman... Now, we need her name and the reason!
If nobody cames up with an answer till tomorrow I will tell you the story which is quite nice.... However, Addi, I think it should be your turn to ask the next Q since you were the first to answer this one.

Danae. The reason was the same reason he always transformed himself into bizarre animals and objects: he was a randy old so-and-so and always sneaking around furtively after women.

I can't think of a reason why it was specifically a shower of gold in this case. Why not, I suppose.

Absolutely right David!!!...emoticon
And the story goes... Danae did not obey Papa King so he locked her in a prison below earth level. There was only one tiny opening on the top of it, enough for water and light to get through...Zeus wanted to... console Danae, but he couldn't get to her in any other way but if he was transformed in water. With his er..."flair" he couldn't have been JUST plain ol'water could he? Now, do you think Papa King was happy when he discovered that on top of disobedient Danae was also pregnant? Noooooo... so , to punish her more, he put her in a wash- tub, threw her into the stormy Aegean and away she went!!!...But the rest will make for another Q and another story!...He, he...

Whoops, sorry. Forgot. emoticon

I was going to look up something really obscure but I'll do an easy one off the top of my head instead...

This hero probably *did* really exist but the beast he killed almost certainly didn't. And he never set foot in the country that now claims him.
